Can Tetrodotoxin Cause Total Muscular Paralysis/failure Without Causing Brain Death?

I’m doing a report on marine life for AP Biology and I was wondering if tetrodotoxin can cause a state of unconscious/subconscious awareness that mimics death. Puffer fish, Porcupine fish, Ocean Sunfish, and Tigerfish carry the toxin, so maybe this may not be so crazy?

  1. CRF says:

In any case of total muscular paralysis, the heart will stop beating and the brain will die very shortly afterwards from lack blood supply. Tetrodotoxin is very poisonous and causes this type of total paralysis, so there would only be a matter of minutes between the onset of paralysis and the cessation of brain function.
